Hi there, this is Jim Monast. I want to thank you for downloading our book, The Worker’s Guide to Injury Compensation in Ohio.
Please don’t take the book as legal advice. Before you pursue your claim or rely on anything you read, check with an attorney or professional for up-to-date information, because the laws change rather frequently—especially here in Ohio.
Ohio operates differently than almost every other state in the country. Most states allow private insurance to cover workers’ compensation injuries, but Ohio requires most employers to pay into the State Insurance Fund. Employers pay for workers’ compensation coverage just as you pay for auto or homeowners insurance. Some employers in Ohio are self-insured, meaning they pay the costs of their claims directly, though they still have to follow the same rules as everyone else.
This booklet gives you background on how Ohio’s system works. If you’ve never had a claim before, it can be a unique and sometimes frustrating process. You need to know how to file a claim, when and how to report an injury, and when to see a doctor.
Be sure to go to the hospital or get checked out by a doctor as soon as possible, and always report your injury to your supervisor, co-workers, or HR department right away. You were probably told this when you started your job, but most people don’t remember everything from orientation. If you don’t report your injury immediately, it doesn’t mean you don’t have a valid claim—but it may make things more complicated with your employer.
People often ask if they can file a claim when they have a pre-existing condition. The answer is yes, you can. The booklet includes real stories from clients we’ve helped over the years, showing what they went through and how the process works.
If you have questions about your claim—or if there’s anything we can do to help—please give us a call. This can be a discouraging system, and sometimes it feels like everyone is questioning or doubting your claim. But don’t let that get you down.
Thank you again, and I hope you enjoy the book. Let us know if we can help.
